Our History
When you stand here and look out over the 221 acres of Stonehaven Hill, you are not just seeing a beautiful landscape; you are looking at a place with a deep and layered history. The story of these stables is intertwined with the larger story of the Pocono Mountains, and it is a story you become a part of the moment you arrive.
The Original Inhabitants
Long before this barn was built, you are standing on the ancestral home of the Minsi (Wolf Clan) of the Lenni-Lenape people. For thousands of years, these hills and forests were their vital hunting grounds. As you ride the trail system, imagine that you are following paths they may have first forged centuries ago. You are experiencing the land as they knew it, a place named "Pocono" from their own words for "a stream between two mountains."
A Land Transformed
The mature, dense forests you see around you today are actually second-growth. Try to picture this entire landscape transformed during the 18th and 19th centuries by a massive lumber boom. The old-growth trees were harvested for shipbuilding, and the landscape was reshaped by the industry. The beautiful woods that you enjoy now are a testament to the powerful ability of the land to recover.
Rebirth and Conservation
The reason you have such incredible access to pristine nature is because of what happened next. After the logging era ended, a new period of conservation began. Your neighbor, Promised Land State Park, is a huge part of this story. When you visit its trails and lakes, you are enjoying a landscape shaped by the young men of the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. Their hard work is what created this recreational sanctuary for you to explore today.
Our Land Today
So, when you board your horse with us at Stonehaven Hill Stables, your experience becomes part of this powerful journey: from a pristine native wilderness, through an era of industry, to its rebirth as a sanctuary. The peace and quiet you and your horse find here is a direct result of that history. You and your horse are not just a guest on a beautiful property; you are stepping into a living piece of Pocono history. Your presence here becomes the newest chapter in the long story of this land.
Promised Land State Park
Besides riding your horse on Stonehaven Hill’s trails, we are only six miles from Pennsylvania’s Promised Land State Park. Promised Land State Park is over 3,000 acres, including equestrian trails, surrounded by over 12,000 acres of Pennsylvania's Delaware State Forest. Visitors enjoy fishing, swimming, picnicking, and boating in two lakes and miles of equestrian and hiking trails for exploring nature’s beauty. The park offers several campgrounds and rustic cabins, or you can stay at one of the nearby Pocono Mountains hotels and resorts listed below when boarding your horse with us.
